Yesterday I found a lawn mower
by some trash bins in an alley
with a tender green vine
wrapped around the pull-cord.
New spark plugs
And a clean carb
Were enough to get her going.
She smoked heavily at first,
but she quit.
Then today in an Beacon Hill alley
There was a chicken
That had escaped from its coop.
I gently picked her up
And lifted her over the fence.
She gave me a gentle cluck.
She was a nice girl.
A young hipster couple watched.
I like to think they were
Tripping on something pleasant.
I\’ll drink beer with Dan now.
I have a bottle.
Barley wine—
barely beer,
hardly wine.
